EAT WELL FOR LESS
Healthy, sustainable eating can save your bank balance and our planet
Worldwide, food costs have soared by as much as 50% over the past decade, so feeding a family can take a massive chunk out of the budget each month. The good news is that with planning and a few changes to your regular shopping and eating habits, it is possible to not only save on your grocery bill but also make sure your life is delicious, nutritious and enviro-friendly.
Eating well for less involves choosing fresh ingredients over pre-prepared foods, consuming more veggies and less meat and dairy, buying in bulk, and shopping around for the best value. Here are some other smart shopping tips:
Plan your meals for the week, make a fresh goods list and stick to it.
Fresh fruit and veg markets and butchers offer good quality at fantastic value, plus they help keep you away from the temptations of large retail stores.
Once a month, add dry foods, cans and bottles to your list and buy in bulk for big savings.
Tinned and dried foods (like rice, pasta and oats) are inexpensive and can easily form the basis of your family’s diet with a diverse range of vegetarian and meat additions.
Balance quality and price. Some foods (like sausages or mince) are cheap because they’re bulked up with cereal and don’t hold much goodness. Never skimp on good nutrition.
Don’t waste food. Globally, much more food is thrown away than there are starving people who could have eaten it. Use what’s in your fridge before buying more and freeze whatever you can’t eat now.
